The Project

Our team has been generating scientific knowledge about giant otters for more than fifteen years (publications) and many of these studies are the backbone for Brazilian and Global Conservation Plans for giant otters.

Despite all the scientific knowledge that have been produced in the last years, giant otters are still classified globally as Endangered (EN) of extinction and threats are increasing faster than the conservation efforts.

The “Projeto Ariranhas” or “Giant Otter Project” was founded to strengthen the conservation of the species and of its ecosystem, looking to improve human-otters co-existence and the engagement of stakeholders in conservation actions and decisions.

The Giant Otter Project works in three fronts: Science, Education and Conservation (see activities for more information).
